For example, if I'm stationed with a group of soldiers that went out on patrols, but I happened to stay behind in the camp while they were in a firefight, am I awarded the combat action ribbon, too?

Yes. For example, if a U.S. Navy ship comes under attack, then the entire crew would be eligible for a CAR. Though, based on your example, I would guess that you personally are not eligible.

No you can not receive the CAR with out being in the combat action it self, but yes it can be awarded to a group, as well as just an individual. for the one asking what a CAR ( Combat Action Ribbon) it is a navy marine corps award, it denotes personal that have come under fire in a combat situation, like the CAB, CIB for the army. this a link that will tell about it and what it looks like.

I'm not sure what a Combat Action Ribbon is, but a Combat Action Badge is awarded to anyone who sees (is engaged in) combat.

Edit: What does a Combat Action Ribbon look like? Is this a Naval Award? Do you have a link?

no you do not get the award for not being in the action while your unit was.

CIB/CAB's are awarded based upon individual action.
