I went to the doctor yesterday, and she suggested my choice of an over-the-counter spermicide because I just had surgery in mid-September to remove fibroids, and my body is supposed to have one year to heal. We DO want to get pregnant as soon as possible after my year is up and she didn't want extra hormones in my body to prevent it. Anyway, I mainly want to know if they're messy and anything else you want to say about it, positive or negative.

When my hubby & I needed to use a backup method (when I was on antibiotics, switching bc, etc.), we used the Encare spermicide thingies--we called them "white bullets." They're basically vaginal inserts that dissolve and release nonoxyl-9.

They weren't exactly messy, but the first couple of times we used them, both hubby & I experienced burning afterwards. Not only that, you have to wait a certain amount of time before having sex, so it kinda takes the spontanaity out of it.

There's also a spermicide film called VCF. They're just small pieces of film that are also vaginal inserts which dissolve and release spermicide. I honestly can't remember if they burned or not, it's been forever since we used them.

There are plenty of options for spermicides, so if one doesn't work so great for you, try another one :)

They are unreliable and I thought they were only taken as a backup option... I know some condoms come with spermicide on them as a secondary line of defense.

They don't manage to kill all the sperm (just most of it), so some usually manage to get through. It's just that only like 1-2% of sperm cells can actually make you prego (the others fight off sperm from other guys or escort the good ones to the egg) so the odds are you won't get pregnant, but it's still a gamble.

They are a bit messy but in a fun sort of way. Use condoms also just to make sure because spermicides don't always work. Some of them little squigglies are strong.

Not any more so than a standard lubricant, if anything, most are a little thicker. There happens to be a contraceptive film you might find a little easier to use. You just fold it up and insert it and its effective for awhile. Good luck!

I liked spermicides...however, I got preggo while on them. They are a tad messy...but I liked the lubrication effect.

They are very messy, unreliable (failure rate of 15% with proper use), and a pain to use. They also made me extremely prone to UTIs for some reason.
Just use a condom.

The best way to not be messy is a condom. Without it you will be messy.
