Try a maltese mix. Usually the place from where you are adopting should know the dog's temperament.
Just ask what dogs they have that are calm and get along with cats.

Best Temperament Small Dogs

My pick? The Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Little dog with a big attitude. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/pembrokecorgi.htm
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a hardy, highly intelligent, obedient, protective and devoted dog. Corgis are extremely active and devoted little dogs, and are usually good with considerate children. They make fine guards, and excellent show and obedience dogs. Wary of strangers, it should be properly socialized and trained when it is still young - to avoid over-protective behavior as an adult. Some Pembrokes are more outgoing, restless and excitable than the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Several of these brave dogs have lost their lives defending their homes, as they were too small for the situation. They sometimes try to herd people by nipping at their heels, although they can be trained not to do this. The Pembroke tends to bark a lot and makes a good alarm dog. Males can be aggressive with other males, particularly if a "female dog" (goodness, I got censored...that's a first) in heat is in the vicinity.

If you are looking to adopt a small dog and have specific adoption requirements, it would be in your best interests to keep your search wide, and not limit yourself to one or two particular breeds. Most shelters or adoption agencies are more than willing to help make the right match for one of their animals. Start visiting local shelters to see the variety of small dogs. Some shelters will even take information about what kind of dog you want, what your lifestyle is and can watch out for that dog to come into the shelter and will notify you. Try visiting with more than a few dogs, and also make sure that they cat test the dog. You may also want to dog test your cat, to make sure hes not going to hit the celing when a dog comes into his previously cats only home. Most will adjust, just give him some time.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7aj

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Bichon Frise. They have the most remarkable wonderful temperament! I have never seen one bite anyone, they are extremely sensitive to moods and so are easily trained.

I can't recommend the breed highly enough.

Thank you a million times over for adopting a rescue dog. They come with baggage, for obvious reasons and require your time and attention and most of all your unconditional love.

It takes a special person to train a dog without negativity and these dogs have had plenty of negativity in their lives already.

Brava!!

That is great you are willing to rescue a dog. Small dogs can be rather timid. I think in this case, it will depend more on how the dog was previously treated, rather than the breed. Spend lots of time with the dog before you choose. Good luck

There is no small dog that is worth having. Any dog who's feet come off the ground when they bark is a problem and should be relegated to old widows in condos.

What you need is a Viszla. Best temperament around, no shedding, and under 40 pounds usually. Very affectionate and extremely smart.

Pugs are great family dogs!! Just beware when you rescue one. There are many pug rescues, but someties there are certain "rules" for them, they may not do well kids or cats, or other dogs, each one is different depending on their situation. But, there are many out there waiting for a good home that can tolerate almost anything. Cheif, our 4 yr. old male is like our son. You can't go wrong with a rescue. :)
