In most cases, the dog just doesn't know what you're talking about. He can't understand humans. You may think that he's trained, but the truth of it may be that he isn't trained and needs to be taught fresh the basic commands. Be very patient and gentle with him, and whatever you do, do not yell. This will only teach him to tune you out.

If you are certain that he knows the basic commands, it may be helpful to re-teach them to him anyways. He could be tuning you out if you happen to yell at him or get angry at him a lot. Or it's possible that he just has a stubborn streak in him. Once the basic commands are taught ("sit" and "come" are probably the most important), get him to sit before giving him anything. Give him a treat and lots of praise when he sits. If he wants outside, make him sit first. If he wants his food, make him sit first. This will teach him that you are the leader and he should look to you for everything. It also tends to help stubborn dogs who would rather do things independently from you.

remember that your dog is a dog, not a person. You are in charge, not the dog.

you should enroll in some obedience classes to help you learn to teach your dog basic commands.

spamk him when he's bad, but not hard, just enough to let him know you don't aprove, and say "No!" he will associate the word no, with his bad behavior.
