She has been fixed, in general does get along with other dogs. I get worried that a male with try to mate with her all the time and drive her nuts. Then I am also worried about the female and in who is the top *****. Are these worries stupid?

It's always best to mix genders when you have two dogs. If you currently have a female, I recommend getting a male.

The reason for this is because dogs of the same gender tend to scrap more because of dominance. When you have two dogs of different genders, then she can be the alpha female and he can be the alpha male. It tends to work out better that way.

There are also a lot of same-sex dogs that get along great, particularly if they're both neutered or spayed. But to prevent possible problems, I recommend getting a second dog of the opposite gender.

I think it depends on your dog's temperament. Does she like other dogs? If so, does she tend to prefer male dogs? Does she show aggression toward other females? If she has not been exposed to other dogs and she is 6, I would not recommend getting another dog- any age. I agree with others who say that you need to have your dog and puppy meet on neutral territory. I would also get some reading material on how to properly introduce a new puppy into the home. I disagree with Anna pink. Your dogs WILL NOT start mating if you get a male- esp. if your female is fixed and you will fix your male puppy. Good luck!

If you get a young puppy it shouldnt really matter much. Depends on the behavior and social ability of your current dog. I would see if the place your looking at puppies will allow you to bring your dog in to see how she reacts to dogs OUTSIDE of her home. Females can be just as territorial as males. So its all about Current dogs behavior to the new dog that will determine if she likes male, female, or any other dog for that fact.

It doesn't really matter, try to intorude them before you commit to buying the puppy though. See what your dogs reaction is.
