Thank you for all those who responded. Well, after work all the lights started soming on, the blinkers stopped, and there was this heart thumping noise when I stopped. I immediately stopped at the mechanics and they tested the battery, aparently I need new alternator, battery, and belt. Now I don't know if I should keep the car.

More than likely the ABS light will not come on for worn pads. If the light comes on and stays on, more then likely the problem would be a faulty ABS sensor. If you need to get the pads replaced, have them also diagnose the sensor light. If you are already having work done, perhaps they will do the diagnostic without further charge. You would, however, have to pay for the sensor if that is the cause.

I would not classify this as an emergency. The ABS light was on in my Explorer for a few months before I replaced the sensor. During that time I encountered no problems with braking.

The ABS light came on because the computer that runs it has a program that sets a code and lights a warning light for low voltage levels. This is to prevent an ABS event that the computer cannot provide enough power to drive the actuators. Get the alternator, belt, and battery replaced. If you need front pads, get them done while you are at it!! Don't scrimp and save when you said you have two kids in the car. This will be a bit of a bill, but a lot less than a new car. Big picture here. Good luck.

I own a '93 GrandAm and have been having my ABS light come on from time to time. They are just at the age now where the occasional electrical problem may show up. More than likely it is one of the front wheel sensors or wiring close to them. Rusty sensors can cause the light to come on and your mechanic may be able to clean them. I personally ignore the ABS light when it comes on in my car as it should not affect braking. Maybe time to decide whether you want to dump money into a 14 year old car or live with a yellow light on the dashboard. If the mechanic says its a wheel sensor, the brakes will work just fine if you leave it the way it is.

no worm pads will not set an abs light . abs is a system in its own the light will come on when there is some thing electorally wrong with the system.. when this happen there will be a code in the ebcm the ebcm aka the brake control module will then disable the abs system your brakes will still work fine that is if they are in good working order you just will not have abs there is no point in guessing what it could be have a dealer or what ever shop you deal with scan the codes this will give you a better idea of what is wrong then go from there and if your not sure on what state your brakes are in have them check'd out as well

That is your Anti Brake system. First check your fluid to see if it is full or not. Running low may cause this. Also some cars have sensors when the brakes need to be replaced. I do not know about your vehicle. SPend $15 at an automotive parts store and get the Haynes Automovie book for your year and model of car. This will tell you all.

I had the same problem with my 93 grand am and it was a bad wheel sensor in the front, you will still have brakes but they won't be anti-lock, if you need new lining as you say just get it fixed along with the new pads, the wheel sensor is not cheap so be fore warned.

Worn brake pads will not turn ABS light on, a sensor or faulty ebcm is more than likely your problem.have it scanned to be sure.

Another day would not go but before I put my kids back in that car before I had it looked at and fixed. Think of the safety of your children and they worth fixing the brakes or even having them check out. Get the brakes fixed, no brainer!
