mike .s and mad jack are jack meats , the reason Toyota is becoming the 1 brand in the world is because of the dependability factor ,resale, cost of ownership i.e maintenance. the guy who bought the extended warranty i am sorry you got whacked (a car term, i sell them ,Toyota's that is ,and dude you got hosed by a bad dealership.) Toyota has a vechile in ever price point there is, for every need you have, ford ,gm never have all of there car, truck or anything constantly chosen by consumer reports as best buys new and used, Toyota and Honda always are in the top ten year after year. just read and you will see, Camry car of the year prius one of the ten best buys. you can buy a Toyota with 80 or 100 thousand miles with out a fear ,you will never ever be able to say that about ford gm or Chrysler.

The term "#1" is really a semantics issue. By number one, I'm guessing you mean the most profitable standalone mark.
How: they just decided to retire their sport models such as the Supra, Celica, and MR2. While these are the very cars that make Toyota command respect, they simply aren't money makers. Instead, they have opted to offer sport versions of everyday grocery-getters
Why: again, specialist cars or sports models (the ones people have good reason to be passionate about) simply fail to sell well. Let me put it this way, most guys only have a say on what car they want to drive for ten years. (that's from age 17 up to about 27) After that, they've no choice but to get cheap, reliable, point A to point B machines.

I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma Pre Runner, double cab, really like it, but I from my experience I would say they are the #1 selling vehicle because their sales people CAN REALLY TELL GOOD LIES. Don't get me wrong I like my truck, but it seems like I've had a curse put on me since I bought it and I've been lied to since the day I bought it by the dealership employees. I even took out the 100,000 mile extended warranty and was told I would get free oil changes for 3 yrs., well guess what, they didn't bother to tell me I have a mileage limit for the 1st 3 yrs. and I only got them for 2 yrs. since I have over 36,000 miles on my truck. I told 'em I didn't ask to get leukemia and be forced to drive 140 miles a month to 1 dr. and that's why my mileage is over the limit I wasn't told about. Also when I bought it I was told by 1 employee that my payment would be a certain amount and its $150.00 more. Next time I'm signing a contract I'm gonna read every word if it takes all day and night before I sign anything. I have learned a valuable lesson and will never buy another new vehicle. The 3 we have were all bought new.

TMC is the second largest vheicle manufacturer in the world but one could argue they do it better than any other vehicle manufacturer since they also make a profit. The answer to how they do it is both simple and complex, but let's keep it simple.
Relentless quest for the highest possible quality has resulted in a product with top of the line reliability that customers want. Good styling and lots of new product launches enabled Toyota to build strong brand recognition. They are known for good service at their dealers and excellent warranty practices.
The strong product means Toyota can often command higher prices than other "comparable vehicles" in the market place. Reliability pays, the customers know it, and they're wiling to pay a bit extra for it.
Toyota's strong commitment to its dealers has resulted in an exceptional distribution system that is effectively managed at all levels.
Historically Toyota has had good advertising that is instantly recognizable and delivers a consistent message.
See how simple it is. But remember, in the auto industry the secret is “product, product, product!”
Hope this helps.

Wow. GM Stock is at about $26/share. We (the Government with our Money) paid $54/share. They still owe us about $60 Billion. If we factor in their Debt, they are not #1 by any factor you can imagine. In what way are they #1? Total numbers of cars sold? Customer Satisfaction? Earnings? I don't see that the would meet any of those. Can you be more specific in which area they are #1? Also, in response to your first Assertion, IF we had let GM Fail, Ford and Chrysler production and sales would have INCREASED to fill the void, thus they would have bought many of GM's facilities and hired their laid-off workers. Ford would have EASILY moved to #1 in any area by picking up the slack from GM's poor management practices that led to Failure. That is the way the system is supposed to work without Government Intervention.

Marketing - Marketing - Marketing.
They have the general public convinced that it is a better car than it really is.
Toyota's break. Toyota's rust. Toyota's wear out, just as fast as any other manufacturer.
They have to SELL you the 100,000 mile warranty. If the vehicle is as good as they claim it is, they could GIVE you this warranty because according to all the claims, these vehicles don't break. so Toyota wouldn't lose any money in warranty repairs.
General Motors gives you the 100,000 mile warranty. If their vehicles were junk, they would go broke doing the warranty repairs. I don't think this is going to happen.
Think about it.

Toyota sells fuel efficiency cars. Those made in Japan are more expensive in other countries. So those made in Thailand for the Asia market.
But I must say those made in Japan are better. Soon I will be driving a Honda civic which is from Japan. More style and sporty. Its time for Toyota to move towards fashion and sporty look and more space.
Drivers are willing to pay for quality car and comfortable drive.

Why? Dependability, quality, innovation, to name a few
I am a proud owner of a Toyota and I will never buy American made again, unless of course I decide to buy a Lexus, then again, they are owned by Toyota, so ....
