There was a recent court case in the UK where a landlord was charged with running illegal poker games in his pub.
His defence was " its not gambling cause it is a game of skill rather than luck"

Skill will take you a long way in poker but at the end of the day it is still luck. Even the best player will lose if dealt enough bad hands.

Anyway, gambling doesn't depend on wether the game is luck or skill so the landlord is walking into a brick wall eitherway. You can't legally bet on pool or darts games in a pub (unless it is licenced to do so) even if you are the one playing and those are generally concidered skill games.

Loaded question.

Any chump can sit down, get 2 good cards dealt to him, and win a hand here or there, but in the long run that player will not be a winner. To be a consistent winner in poker, you need skill. If poker were all luck, the Champions that have won 10 or 11 WSOP bracelets would have to be considered the luckiest people on Earth. That's not the case though. They are considered to be the best players on Earth based on their skill, not luck.

It's luck in the very short term (like one hand), but skill in the long term. If it were all (or even mostly) luck you wouldn't have people making a living playing poker professionally. If you want proof check out the videos at http://www.pokerdynasty.net/ You can definitely see the advantage a skill player has over people who think it's all luck.

Poker is a game of luck and skill. Luck comes with the hand your dealt, the skill comes with the way you play those cards and the people your playing against.

In the United States (with the exception of California) it doesn't matter. In U.S. law the relevant issue is the risk. Does is exist as part of a business function that serves a public good, such as the risk inherent in the stock market? The risk in the stock market exists because of the capital formation and risk transfer elements of investing. The risk in playing poker is entirely fabricated. There is no public function served by the risk inherent in playing poker.

I would consider 'skill' to be card counting which is cheating. I think most gambling card games are down to an large element of luck.

It doesn't matter really because if their is money at stake the Landlord needs a gaming license for this sort of game to be played. Not good new for you I know.
