We are frozen in here about a week. The other day I threw some crackers out for the birds. Later my friend said salt is bad for the birds. Did I kill the birds with thesse crackers?? They were bacon cheese flavor.

No more salt for the birds. I am buying birdseed when my ride gets here.

Folks - please be assured - salt DOES kill birds and it doesn't have to be in large doses.
Outside birds are slightly different as they have more of a tolerance because they scavenge.
NEVER feed your home birds salt - I lost a bird of mine because while I was away for a few days, the pet sitter fed him a few crisps - it killed him almost instantly so please be careful out there.

You didn't kill them, but I would not make this a regular practice. Salt motabalizes differently in birds. Once in a great while, it won't hurt, but if they have a lot of it then there will be a problem. In a pinch, you can feed your birds cooked pasta (without salt), brown rice, fruits and veggies, plain cheerios, whole wheat bread, and other healthy foods.

No They have been treated for human consumption. Also salt not good for birds. Feed only natural peanuts bought as a bird feed or out of outer shells. (Monkey nuts)

salt isnt good, nor is any PROCESSED foods good for wildlife. It wont kill them unless they ate too much but thats not likely, wild birds dont overeat. More likely crackers and bread and things will not only attract birds they will attract squirels and racoons. So best to throw out bird food, fruit, some unsalted peanuts, or sunflowers seeds.

Unless you are feeding seagulls or other ocean or salt marsh birds, salty foods are bad, since birds cannot easily rid their bodies of excess salt. However, they can survive. I doubt you killed the birds.

I have had my Quaker parrot for quite some time. He is two years old. He eats chicken in a biskit almost on a daily basis and the salt has never harmed him.

Yes, I've seen European **** dead after they munched on the neighbour's salted lard blocks placed outside in winter. Seeing those beautiful birds lying dead frozen in snow a few feet away from the blocks of lard they foolishly picked upon was very distressing!!!
