This isn't in the bible but in Catholisism.

These are old, pre-Vatican II terms, when sin was treated legalistically, but the basic idea is the same. Sin is regarded as damage to one's relationship with God. "Venial" sin is like a wound to the relationship. With serious or "Mortal" sin, the relationship has broken off, "died" if you will.

The extent of the damage indicates the extent of the reconcilliation needed. Minor sins can be overcome by a contrite heart and prayerful participation in the community. A broken relationship needs consultation with a representative of the community (i.e. a priest in a sacramental situation) so the penitent can meaningfully reconstruct the relationship.

The old, technical definition of sin had three conditions:
1) It has to be a sin.
2) You have to know it's a sin.
3) You have to intentionally do it.
"Mortal Sin" required all three condition. "Venial Sin" didn't.

Mortal sin requires full knowledge and complete consent. It presupposes knowledge of the sinful character of the act, of its opposition to God's law. It also implies a consent sufficiently deliberate to be a personal choice. Feigned ignorance and hardness of heart do not diminish, but rather increase, the voluntary character of a sin.
Venial sin weakens charity; it manifests a disordered affection for created goods; it impedes the soul's progress in the exercise of the virtues and the practice of the moral good; it merits temporal punishment. Deliberate and unrepented venial sin disposes us little by little to commit mortal sin. However venial sin does not break the covenant with God. With God's grace it is humanly reparable. "Venial sin does not deprive the sinner of sanctifying grace, friendship with God, charity, and consequently eternal happiness."

If your are "catlick" you gotta confess your whole life story. You just have to do more penance for the biggies. Been there, jumped ship.
