Technically, forever. Chocolate loses moisture over time, but it won't go "bad" if it's kept in "constant" conditions. Dark chocolate, especially, because it contains less fat than milk chocolate.
After it's been sitting around a while, chocolate will develop "bloom"...that white, sort of hazy coating. It's harmless, but it means that the chocolate has dried out some, and that may affect the flavor.
Also...if you have candies, such as chocolate-covered cherries, the chocolate will still be OK long after the cherries (or whatever) have spoiled.

Dark chocolate as any chocolate shouldn't go bad. If the temperature changes to often a bloom will develop on the chocolate which only affects the appearance of the chocolate but that is all. I have a Valrona chocolate slab in my pantry since last Easter it is fine. I hope that I have been some help to you.

It's important to store chocolate at a dark and cool place and it will stay good for year. Dark chocolate has been made of mostly natural ingredients, so a couple of months at least, room temperature will make it melt and makes the taste fade too.

I'm not sure about the time factor but I do know that chocolate can sometimes that powdery white coating that makes it taste awful, even if it's within the use-by date. Room temperature and humidity affects chocolate. I just keep mine in the fridge.

I can only keep dark chocolate around for about 5 minutes before I devour it all.

I would say about 6 months for best tasteing but up to a year it's not going to hurt. It may get a bit of bloom or discoloration though.
