It depends on the crime, and how it is commited. If someone calls and reports that something has happened, whether they witnessed it or not, and the officer did not witness it himself, then more than likely he will want to give a statement form to anyone that was there to write down thier statement on exactly what they saw.

pending on the crime you could recieve a verbal/written warning, a written citation or they could place you under arrest and start the proccess for you to be placed infront of a judge and/or jury. from there you will either recieve nothing, jail time, probation time, community service, fines or some other form of punishment.
