you are aware that NCS is 15 months of Active Duty follwed by a mandatory 24 months in the Reserves, and that they are NOT allowing NCS to stay AD once their 15 months is up. Keep that in mind if you are looking to stay Active duty.

go to military.com and in their community message boards, go to Joining the Navy. you will get some good information there. You can also check about.com. The guy who maitains that site does a decent job of keeping it up to date.

In the Navy, the best, most challenging and rewarding, enlisted ratings were in weapons and electronics. AO for aviation ordnanceman and AE or AX for avionics/electronics.

But these are among the toughest ratings to qualify for. You must essentially have a college level IQ. In fact, the electronics training gained in the Navy is on a par with what a student would get earning his BSEE, minus the non technical stuff like history etc. a college grad needs to take.

I would opt for the electronics ratings. With what you learn in the Navy, you can easily apply to getting a BSEE in college after getting out. You might even be able to get credit for some of the courses based on your Navy training.

Oh, aviation jet mechanic (I don't remember the rating) would also be a good choice. The commercial airlines are always looking for highly trained jet mechanics.

Good luck and let you have fair seas and following winds. (An old Navy saying from an old Navy guy.)
