Reason I ask is I have a BMI of just below 20, yet I suspect my fat percentage is quite high. I carry a lot of weight aroud my stomach-is it possible that I don't weigh that much on the scale, because I have no muscle mass, but I'm all fat though?

Yes, it is possible. For example, BMI is based on an average build. If you have a small frame, you would have more body fat at a BMI of 20, than someone with an average frame of the same BMI. Also, if you have lost a lot of muscle, due to crash diets or lack of exercise, this can increase your body fat percentage.

However, it is perfectly normal for a woman to have as high as 30% body fat and still not be overfat. For men it is much less and should be no higher than 22%. A BMI of 20 would equate to approximately 22%-24% body fat for an average frame non-athletic woman, which is ideal.

Hi Peter, It certainly is possible to have a high body fat percentage even if your weight is normal. The 'skinny fat' phenomenon has been cause for new concerns in people believed to be at a normal weight but who were found to still be at risk for excess fat-related conditions due to their high body fat percentage. You should get your body fat checked by either your physician or your gym. They can give you an idea of whether your body fat is normal or not.

Yes, BMI is a joke. What you may have is a high fat content and a low muscle content.

definetly, the BMI is so inaccurate. it is very common for people to be "slim" but still have a high percentage of body fat because they simply lack lean body mass. this is commonly referred to being "skinny fat". just about every model and actress in hollywood is skinny fat.
