Our Black Shepard runs under the table and won't come out. When our White German Shepard is up and around, the black shepard is fine. When trying to train him to come to us, he slobbers and is very scared. He just sits there. We have tried treats, a leash and alot of praising him. Any other suggestions?

Hi Don!!
Dogs have different reactions to fear. Typically when afraid they will hide, cower, lower their head, flatten their ears, put their tail between their legs and possibly roll over in submission.

If your pet exhibits excessive fear check with a vet to ensure that there isn’t a medical issue. The good news is that many fears can be reduced through training. For instance, if your dog is afraid of strangers, with help from a friend slowly and carefully introduce the dog to your friend.

If your dog starts getting nervous stop and try again later. Exposing your pet gradually to its fear will usually help him adjust. However, don’t force the situation. In dealing with fear what you don’t do is very important.

Sorry to hear that your dog isn't reacting well to you. Remember that eye contact from humans is viewed by dogs as a challenge - that's why you hear of dogs peeing submissively in front of humans. Be sure everyone in your house knows to not stare at your dog - it may seem strange, but just ignore him. Don't try to train him right now - just work on him being comfortable around you. A home visit from a trainer who uses only positive methods would be a great idea, as he or she can give you some ideas about bringing your dog out of his shell. No Cesar Milan stuff please! The last thing your dog needs is harsh and nonsensical 'alpha' treatment. A vet visit is important too - checking him for thyroid problems might be a good start.

Sounds like this dog has a very serious temperament problem? What were his parents like? Likely didn't have stable temperaments either. You'd best find a very qualified trainer for this dog because he's going to turn into a fear biter - and they're the most dangerous dogs out there.
