When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment. (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)

I get the idea that he changed his mind from Christians who keep saying "all that stuff was in the OT and is no longer valid."

Oh Steve, maybe some Lecithen would help, your attemps at questioning that which you obviously have no ability to understand based on your own conviction that the mind is mearly a machine of which youy have no control, is getting increasingly weaker.
I am so sorry that the condition of your brain is in such a state. Oh well, no attemp to assist you will do any good as you do not have the ability to coose for yourselve your action or reaction.
For the others who, for Steve's benifit, enjoy a set of chemical responses in there brains that have allowed for some independent thought and consideration of evidences presented:
Nowhere in the bible does God condone slavery, or does it suggest that he changed his mind on the matter.
God charged man with stewardship over all beasts, plants and everything that grows upon the earth.
Man, through his agency, and failings to follow those teachings of God made himself subject to the will, and temptations of other men.
Yes God, has allowed men agency and has even at times, allowed men through there agency to become subserviant to others as a concequence of their their own agency to not follow his will.
This does not indicate, condone or otherwise suggest that slavery at the hands of man's sole judgement is, or ever has been condoned of God.
Of course we should still love and support Steve. He can't help it. He has no contol over his concious thought. It is sad, but as long as he believe's it I will support him in his rambling no matter how meaningless.

Wrong kind of slavery. Slavery back then was because you owed someone a debt or you lost the war and were made a slave. God only allowed slavery for seven years and then the slave must go free and the debt marked paid.
God still tells us not to go into debt and not to owe any man anything because if we do we become a slave to that debt. Some men went into slavery to buy a wife that they wanted. As soon as the debt was paid they left with their wife.
God has always said slavery is bad but it will happen if you are indebted to someone.
Are you not a slave to paying off a credit card?

God never condoned the mistreatment of slaves as they are mistreated today. In fact, in the days of Israelites, slaves were protected under the Mosaic Law and givin numerous rights. Slaves were nothing more than workers who lived with you, and were still to be viewed as equals. Man has eventually digressed to the point of treating slaves worse than animals. Something God does not condone.

It isnt bad, mistreatment of slaves is bad. Slavery was one of the only ways the non-wealthy didnt starve to death. There would be nothing wrong with you taking a poor person to come work for you, provided you dont mistreat them. There are so many examples of this today in modern employment. But God did not condone mistreating slaves and wouldnt condone mistreating employees either.

Some people in those days actually sold themselves to pay off a debt. They sold just themselves at times and at other times they sold their whole family. People without housing would become slaves. Slavery hasn't always been bad. But you must remember just because something existed doesn't mean God rejoiced in it.

I'm not sure why you say He condoned it, what are your facts? Because of mankind's free agency He has allowed slavery to occur on many occassions, without intervening, but this does not mean he condones it (even if on other occassions he has freed people from slavery).

When the development of machinery rendered slavery no longer economical, it suddenly became moral not to own slaves. Machines are cheaper.

I don't think that God (according to the Bible) ever changed His mind. Doesn't the New Testament say "Slaves, obey your masters."? It doesn't tell them to revolt and slay their masters, as I would have said.

God doesn't condone anything. People condone things.
Isn't God supposed to be perfect? Wouldn't that go against the religion if he didn't know it was bad from the beginning?

There is no god - only the choices and actions of man. At one point we condoned it and now we do not.
