As an Atheist, I have two definitions of faith. One is the ridiculous type that has no foundation or structure...in other words, religious faith.
The other is called logical faith. It is a faith that at least has a foundation and structure in place that can support your faith. An example is this: I have faith that my wife and I will never have an affair on one another. Why? Because my faith in that is based on a foundation of love, respect, admiration and dedication to one another.

I can't say that I truly understand anything but I can say that "faith" means that you believe in something regardless of what others think, often times faith may be found in the face of skepticism and criticism, yet faith always prevails. I wouldn't say I am an atheist, I am more of an agnostic.

So are you trying to say that you are the only person in the world who knows what faith is?
Are you saying that if a particular group of people do not agree with your views that they do not know what faith is?

Yes. Everyone operates on faith in something. Riding an elevator is an act of faith.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen. Atheism practices more faith than most other religions.
In simple terms for a Christian it is simply believing God is going to do what He said He would do.

FAITH: The insertion of fantasy where science has left a blank space to be filled in later.
OR
FAITH: The belief against all evidence that reality isn't actually what it is perceived to be.
OR
FAITH: Trust in the unknowable for defense against the inescapable.
These are said relatively tongue-in-cheek, but you have to admit that using a word that is not commonly understood means that you yourself are failing to communicate. It is incumbent on the speaker to make themselves understood, not the listener to decipher the message.

You CAN have faith in things without having faith in a religious deity. For some of us religion is more of a distraction than a solution.

Yes. We operate on faith every time we start dating someone. We don't KNOW they are a good person, but they seem like it... so we might go on a second date. That's faith... operating on something you have no proof of. Ultimately, we have proof of whether they are believable or not. Same for religion... you can have faith, but ultimately... there's no proof. The equivalent of a bad third date.

Faith is simply hope that your belief system is right. Atheists have faith in science.
