Take a treat in front of his nose.
Put him in sit
DO NOT CROUTCH to his level
Bend in front or next to leading from his nose down to the floor
Make sure to use the command word

If your don't won't go down........

Repeat the above only place your hand under his shoulder area and gently add pressure assisting him to the floor.

Don't push to hard or he'll resist, just gently.

If it's a boney dog and you're on a hard surface he may not lie because it hurts him.

Good Luck

When the dog is in a SIT, take a yummy treat in your hand. The dog should be on a leash so you can control it. With treat in hand, put the treat by the dogs nose so it can smell it, and lure it to the ground by saying "down". Your hand should move in a smooth, quick motion toward the floor so the dog's nose follows it. Never move or touch them physically to get them to lay down...unless you always want to move them physically or push them into a "down". When you push them (even gently) into position, they associate the touch with the "down" more so than the words.

It's pretty easy for them to learn it after a few repeats and some yummy treats.

I tough my puppy to Sit first. I used treats when he would sit and I would wait a few seconds to give him a treat. Then I would say Sit Down once he is already sitting. And wait till he would sit down and he would be rewarded. Might have to show what you mean by gently helping the puppy. Never keep repeating yourself if they aren't doing it but def make a huge deal when they do something good.

1st teach him to sit. With a treat in your hand go to the floor, make sure he sees the treat tell him "down", we will have to repeat this a lot & may have to make hime lie down by pulling out his front legs.

Hi, I agree with Jenny. She wrote what I was basically going to write! This sounds like what they taught us in puppy class. Good luck! :)
