I am going to be visiting my Aunt soon and plan to take my dogs with me. She has heart troubles and I am afraid my dog will start barking in the middle of the night and give her a heart attack. She has a hound dog bark that startles me, let alone my Aunt. What can I do to make her stop? NO SHOCK COLLERS PLEASE!

Hi!!
Aside from the behavior is barking dog is probably the pet peeve of many non-dog owners.

Most dogs get noisy when exposed to anything new or unusual. Like most dog behavior, barking is typically a symptom of an unsatisfied need. Barking is simply a dog's means of communication, whether directed at other dogs, at members of the household, or at the world in general. It may be an attempt to stake out territory, or warn owners of intruders. Since dogs are social animals, it could be a symptom of loneliness and attempt to get attention- announcing to the unseen, but very audible early morning chorus of his peers that, "Yeah, I'm here, too."

First of all, your dog must learn that barking for your attention doesn't work.

Make something mysterious and unsettling happen. Something so puzzling that he forgets barking for a while.

If you are at this point and still having difficulty, anti-barking collar is probably your best solution.

If a dog that barks and growls and shows his teeth in a threatening way is getting ready to bite you. Do not squirt water up his nose. Do not threaten him. Consult with your veterinarian or dog psychologist.

Hai,
to keep your dogs from barking on seeing another alien dog is natural. Make them friends by freqent visit to your aunt's house accompanied with your dogs.
Best of Luck And Good Wishes.

Why are you against bark collars? They are not cruel as someone else suggested and THEY WORK. I am talking about the electric collars, not the fake ones. I do not care what the reason for barking is, sometimes, as humans and pack leaders, we want quite. The bark collar will teach a dog to be quite when told to do so. The dog learns by its mistakes just like we all do. Bark collars are very effective and I have used them for years without any problems. Consider giving one a try.

well i hate to say it, but if this is her normal behavior there is nothign you can do to stop it for one night or a week, it will take time and training to get her to stop, there is not an easy fast fix. I dont agree with shock collars either they are mean. and i doubt that would be a fast fix either. There is really nothing you can do but warn your aunt about it and prepare her for it, or gulp not take your dogs, and i dont knnow about you but that is not possible for me. I dont go anywhere with out them. Good Luck!

a citronella collar. It sprays a burst of liquid, not harmful in any way, into the dogs face every time it barks.
