Paul was originally Saul of Tarsus, a Pharisee and a lawyer, tutored under Gamaliel, one of the greatest law professors of their time.
Saul was sincere in his efforts to destroy Christianity as he truly believed that they were a false religion and, as a Jew, he was zealous for true worship.
Evidence that God truly can read hearts is in the way that Saul received a vision (or lack of vision - he was blind for a day) with instructions about how his ministry should proceed from Jesus. Seeing the error of his ways, Saul became Paul and his life's passion from that point on was to preach the Good News of God's Kingdom throughout all humanity (to the best of his ability). Paul suffered stonings, shipwreck (more than four times), hunger, nakedness and all kinds of tribulation in his ministry but, when he looked back on all that he had before (went from privileged Pharisee to humble tent-making Christian), he said that everything he had before was a lot of refuse and that his greatest gift in his life was his ministry.
He trained Timothy to start up new congregations and took the lead in first-century preaching and organizing of the congregation.
A righteous and humble man with a wonderful example for us to follow.

I know he is the one man who made Jesus. Without Paul's teachings Jesus would be a little unknown forgotten Jewish sect recorded in history as a simple fish symbol. BB
