The Iraqi people I met all believed that they had the chance for a better future. However they said that it would take about five years before things would really get sorted out.
Those people all hate the terrorism going on and feel that if we left they would be at the mercy of whichever thugs had more guns.

I'm in Baghdad, now.
Here are my thoughts. I enjoy working with the Sunnis, mostly. I have a few Shiites that I work with, one contractor and a few "terps" (interpreters).
They are a passionate people. I have also learned that many of them are glad that we are here and want stability before we leave. They want to be secure. They don't want war, anymore, except for the Shiites who want the Sunnis to suffer for 35 years like they did under Saddam.
They're not exactly a forgiving bunch...
Completion of this mission is dependant on the actions of the Iraqi Army and the Iraqi Police. Until we have the ability to destroy the Mahdi Militia who has permeated the police, stability will be difficult and there could be a civil war between the IP's and the IA.
We can win the peace. It's just going to take time.

Spent 18 months in Iraq. I found the Iraqi people that I met to be like most people I have met. They want to be able to live in peace, have a family, make a reasonable income to support their family and be free to practice their religion.
Completion....eventually is the best I can say.

I've neve benn to Iraq. But I don't think it'll unite as one country. I think it would be better if it split into different states.
