Depends on what is important to you.

Bottom line is that the Volkswagen Jetta 2.5 and especially the 2.0 turbo have tons more LOW END TORQUE than the Honda. That means they launch hard off the line and "feel" fast and responsive. Especially the turbo, which has more than 220 lbft of torque versus the Honda's puny 135 lbft. Torque is what moves the car, not horsepower.

Now if you like revving to 7000 RPM to feel any thrust, then the Honda is a great choice for that. It's a high RPM machine. Of course the VW also has variable valve timing so it doesn't miss out either. I love how Honda STILL advertises VTEC like it's something special when every single car on the road has had it for YEARS now.

The turbo VW will be faster than the Civic in every way that counts and it will be much easier to modify for real gains. You can spend $300 on a chip for a turbo car like the VW and gain 30 hp instantly. To gain 30 hp out of the naturally aspirated Honda you are going to have to spend more than $1000 on air intakes and a full exhaust system including headers and even then, all your gains are going to be a stupid high RPMS that you won't be driving in in normal driving unless you cruise around in 2nd gear everywhere you go like a ricer.

In fairness to Honda, the Civic is going to be the more reliable car. It's probably got slightly better handling stock too. Resale value will be slightly higher for it as well, it will not depreciate as much.

If reliability is in your top three priorities and low-end torque and power off the line isn't, then the Honda is the obvious choice.

If you care more about "kick in the ***" type of power off the line and prefer European styling to the Jetsons interior in the Civic and are willing to sacrifice some reliability to get it, then go with the Volkswagen.

VW always gives an impression that your a smart hip young guy who has some money... but the $ porition is because when that Jetta does have something wrong with it you better be able to fish out $1000s. I had a VW new turbo bug and I spent $7K on repairs on that friggin thing. Now I have a Toyota and my family owns Honda's and we have no problems. The only problem is that everyone from the busboy to the manager has a civic... but there is good reason because they last well and are cheap to fix, when you need to - which is rarely. I would stick with the civic. I had one for my 1st car and it was a dream. If you want something different than everyone else why not try one of the Sions? They are hot cars! Good luck!

The Jetta you will need to do some work on if you want to out run the Civic Si right off the lot. Personally I think the Jetta looks better and is safer in an accident, it will cost more to repair and for after market parts.

German is better than Japenese. So the Jetta. But they are better than anything built in the U.S. But being young Its cheaper to go with honda part and maintance is cheaper.

from my existence the Honda would be a better choice. Your local parts store can get about performance part or repair part you need. There's not as much German stuff out there or its more money and hard to get.

I wouldnt buy either one. Get a pick up truck. Check this out, I bought a brand new 2007 GMC Sierra for a little over 19 grand. but the dealership gave me 3150 for my trade-in, and a 4000 off in rebates. thats one hell of a deal! and the truck hauls, and it hauls a*s. And i get 22 mpg. Forget the imports!
