Its a brain-cell that forms part of a neural-network. Higher brain functions like decision making are not really understood, but you can read about how a neural-network process your senses like the images coming in through your eyes and recognising edges and features etc, then leading on to higher level networks that recognise objects, faces, letters and numbers, etc.
Some of our understanding of neurons comes from creating artificial neurons and neural networks as either electronic circuits or simulations on a computer. People can then examine how these networks can be made to learn by training them to recognise edges and features and objects, etc.
The postal service uses artificial neural networks to do Optical Character Recognition to read addresses and ZIP/Post Codes.
A very good program that demonstrates it is the old Windows 3.1 shareware program 'Atree adaptive logic network (ALN) simulation package' (see download link). It demonstrates learning and OCR. It may still run on Windows XP. The documentation and help file is very informative about how neural networks work.

Neurons are used for transmission or receive electrical impulses. In other words if you move your right hand your brain transmits this to fire a neuron to make your right hand move. I hope this helps.

I get so damned mixed up with my new meds and est each week. nearly didn't find my way home this morningl. but i am fine now. all out of new syringes for this week. use the old dirty ones andthat is bad.
