I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, that last Autumn the air conditioner went out. I took it in to a local dealer, and was told that the condensor was "bent" and had to be replaced. In addition, to access the condensor, I was told that they would have to "take off" the front bumper. Doing so would require at least a $1000 repair bill. I decided to pass on the repair since I would not need the air condition over the winter. I do want it fixed for this upcoming summer. Is it necessary to remove a bumper to access a "bent" condensor?

A condenser is not a terribly difficult fix. Do not pay someone 1000 bucks for a new one. The job might take a little time but not a thousand bucks worth of time. If the dealer said that your condenser needs to be replaced because it was "bent" then take it somewhere else for two reasons: 1) You don't replace a condenser just because it is "bent." Is it leaking? What exactly is "bent?" 2) 1000 bucks is rediculous. Sometimes people go to a dealership with a false sense of security, they don't always know what they are talking about and they will almost always charge you too much for the repair. We took my girlfriends 2002 neon in for service and the service advisor said, "well, looks like it is due for a service." I asked what all the service included and his reply was, "well you know we will clean out the carburator and stuff along those lines." I asked my girlfriend to jump in the car and I told the service advisor to have a nice day. "Is there a problem?" he asked. My response was, "yes, this car is a 2002 and it is fuel injected, it does not have a carburator." Obviously the guy didn't have a clue what he was talking about

I really don't think that you have to take the bumper off, but, however, you will have to take the radiator off. It is directly in front of it. I would get a second opinion. Just don't say anything about having taken it to another shop. Just tell them that you a/c quit working last year and you knew that you would not need it for the winter and now you want to get it fixed. Don't give your opinion at all because if you really knew what was wrong, why are y ou taking it to the shops anyways. It is better to not say anything then to get yourself screwed because you opened your mouth.
