In illustrations of doctors (esp. from back in the day) what is the metal circle worn witha band on the head?

You know... pictures and illustrations of doctors from back in the day... they wore a band on their heads with a little metal circle on their foreheads... what are those??

I think it was used to reflect light and aim it on the area they were examining.

It is definitely used to reflect and concentrate light to an area being examined.
