I'm trying to learn to speak Portuguese (the Portugal version) on my own. I can't afford those Rosetta Stone things. Anyhow, I'm getting confused on when Obrigado is used and when it is Obrigada. I know they're masculine and feminine, but... does it depend on whether the speaker is male or female, or whether you're speaking TO a male or female or is it something else entirely?
I took spanish all through high school and I think it is really making this harder for me instead of easier.

It depends on whether the SPEAKER is male or female. So, a guy says 'obrigado' and a girl says 'obrigada'. It's a bit like the English regional 'thank you' = 'much obliged' < 'I'm much obliged', which may help you to remember why it's the gender of the speaker that matters.

i know brazilian portuguese,but it doesn´t matter...in portuguese
obrigado is used by men and obrigada by women.....
