Yep, Did my '06 returns yesterday. Very easy and FREE! I've used Turbo Tax and H & R Block's free service in the past.
The IRS is sponsoring the Free File Alliance. The FFA has partnered with many tax preparation services that will allow millions of taxpayers to file their federal return for free. Some of the partners are allowing free preparation/e-filing of state returns.
If you go to a service that doesn't offer free state returns, you can probably go to your state's Dept. of Revenue website and file for free. I did.
Most Americans that made under $52,000 will qualify for the free service. But you can follow the Free File link at the IRS.gov website to determine which ones you qualify for.
Your return will not take any longer to process because you used the free service. And direct deposit or mailing of your refund are available when filing your return.

I file my own taxes on line every year using H&R Block online services, because I am a single mom in a certain income level and I e-file and do direct deposit I can file them for free, I am not sure about all the particulars as too how qualifies. Just ck their website. I live in Kentucky and it costs me $20 bucks to efile with them, check your state. If you use H&R Block they will tell you the price. Its very easy to follow and much cheaper then doing it any other way if your wanting to E-file if you want to do the paper forms and mail them it has always been free.

IRS.com (Internet Revenue Services) appears to be a website that gets paid by referring people to various online tax return companies.

You can use the real IRS website (www.irs.gov) to link to companies providing free federal online tax returns.

Unfortunately, most online tax return preparers charge to file online state taxes, although most states have websites where you can file online for free.

I have e-filed for free for the last 4 years. It takes a while but very worth it. irs.gov is the best way to start. I know in California you have to file the state on your own..at least I have yet to find a website to help with that one.

i believe that if you file online you have to pay a small fee, but get them back faster
if you get the forms and stuff at the library or the tax place it's free
