You should install more security, preferably a full security suite, which would include a firewall. I had free AVG and free ZONE ALARM installed on my computer and still my computer became infected with viruses. I was advised that you get what you pay for and it is probably better to BUY a Security Suite. Since I installed McAfee Security suite everything has been OK. PC World often has half-price offers (prob. about £25)
You don't say if you are using dial-up or broadband. With broadband it is essential to have a firewall, as well as anti-virus etc.
Regards picking up your e-mail, BT Yahoo is excellent, and you can easily get a free yahoo e-mail address. Yahoo will not deliver any suspicious mail to your inbox, but will place it in a bulk folder. I always go to Yahoo to collect my e-mail. I do not use Microsoft or Internet Explorer, but always Yahoo.
Hope this helps. If I've confused you, the ask some more questions. It's worth it and if you have any friends with a bit of experience then discuss also with them.
I suggest you edit your question and give a bit more info.

If you are talking about the free virson of AVG anti-spyware then you also need to download AVG free.
I beleve that it sould come already set-up to scan your e-mails and they will be scanned when you reseave them. You can tell if it has scanned it by checking the e-mail and at the bottom it will say scanned with avg ........ no virus found.

It does the check itself , however, the easiest way to scan for virus yourself , click the right mouse button on the file / directory / drive that you want to scan , and then choose the "Scan with AVG" option.
