I think this is always a personal preference, but in my experience having owned many dogs, I have found German Shepards, Border Collies, and Labrador Retrievers to be the most 'intelligent'. My best dog ever, was a half German Shepard, half Husky. (they 'met' at a dog show!) If I EVER see a puppy of that mix again, I would get it without hesitation.

Hi cowboy, I consider the herding dogs to be the smartest. If you think about it they were bred to obey all sorts of commands. My cousins have genius border collies. They are very hiper and intense, and they have channeled all that energy into training so they are amazing dogs. I wasn't sure if there was a proven smartest breed, but according to an internet search these are some sites that discuss it further: http://www.terrificpets.com/forum/8723.asp

From what I found it varies immensely between dogs, many are very smart, but overall border collies are smartest.

When my Irish Setter was still alive, my chihuahua knew that he wouldn't share his food willingly. She'd run to the front door and bark like crazy. Of course he thought there was someone in the yard and would run right out the door to look. She'd go back and finish his dinner. Don't know what that says for the Setter's intelligence, but I thought it was pretty smart of the chihuahua!

According to doggy IQ tests, the Australian Shepherd is the brightest. (They are most likely to remember where a treat was hidden, figure out how to get a treat, etc).

Labs, or any dog with big, sad eyes. They really know how to tug on the old heartstrings. LOL
