This is a weird one. My best friend eats sponges... she reckons its something she was told years ago that makes you thin. She has done it for years and I thought she had stopped doing it but says she still does??? She buys them new and just eats them like any normal person would eat chocolate. Anyone heard of anything like this? I have heard about anorex girls eating loo roll to fill their tummys to avoid eating?

No not sponges as in cakes. Actual sponge. She said it doesnt do her any harm as it just goes in one end and out the other... im sure that cant be pleasant. She hasnt lost any weight at all, well she isnt even fat. She says its addictive and she cant stop and if its doing her no harm why should she?

Yeah! I've actually heard of this one. I head it when I was about 7 years old. That if you eat a sponge then the sponge will absorbe the water in your tummy and make your tummy feel *FULL* and then you will never get hungry and never want to eat.

I didn't know that people *really* did do this stuff.

I hope your friend is ok!!! I hope she is well!! Ask her if the sponges are actually coming out in her poopy, or if they are staying inside her tummy and rotting. If she gets sick from this, please take her to the emergency room and get her a tummy X-Ray!

Be Well!! Take Care!

I never heard of he toilet paper thing! Interesting. I learned something today. As for the sponges, that isn't normal. You're friend needs to find a way to stop. If she wants to control her weight, she needs to find a better way to do it. Exercises and eating properly are the only way. No ifs ands or buts!

I have never heard of that, but I did see a special on tv once about supermodels who eat paper to make their stomach's feel full, I'm sure it's something like that. Either way, it's not healthy and your friend has a problem and should see a doctor.

Of course vegetarians/vegans do not eat sponges! Only a meat eater would do that. We love the ocean and the animals in it. <3

The name is PICA
Pica is the persistent craving and compulsive eating of non-food substances.
The puzzling phenomenon of pica has been recognised and described since ancient times. Pica has been observed in ethnic groups worldwide, in both primitive and modernised cultures, in both sexes, and in all age groups. The word pica comes from the Latin name for magpie, a bird known for its unusual and indiscriminate eating habits. In addition to humans, pica has been observed in other animals, including the chimpanzee.

Pica in humans has many different subgroups, defined by the substance that is ingested. Some of the most commonly described types of pica are eating earth, soil or clay (geophagia), ice (pagophagia) and starch (amylophagia). However, pica involving dozens of other substances, including cigarette butts and ashes, hair, paint chips, and paper have also been reported.
If not successfully treated may result in death.

It's similar to the toilet roll thing, just another way to make yourself feel full. Defiantly not healthy. Surly it's got to start clogging her up at some point!
