Motor Trend named the Mercedes GL-class SUV of the year for 2007, so that should say something.
The Nissan Xterra was the 2006 winner.
The Land Rover LR3 was the 2005 winner.
They decide based on features, comfort, design and overall driveablility on/off road however. Reliability isn't part of their rating system. If that is a priority for you I would steer you towards either a Lexus/Toyota SUV or a Honda/Acura model. Any of them will be very competitive in their class and will offer reliability and resale that few of the others can match.
