Because most Christians would not expect to get criticism from one of their own.

Honestly, I can see where someone would get the idea that you are not Christian from reading that question. But it's still best not to make assumptions.
I have noticed that a lot of Christians around here get their backs up if you question anything in the Bible or anything about the Christian faith in general. I have raised a few questions of that nature, and I read some of the answers thinking that the people behind them would have been throwing holy water on me if they were able to.
And I am not an atheist, either.

Your last question was a good one. We as Christians often fall short in this area, mostly because we lack the biblical knowledge to handle ourselves.
Here is a good article for Christians who want to understand why it is important to state your case, make your point, not be persuaded by opposing views but there is a better (biblical) way to accomplish this.
The bottom-line is Christians must APPROOVE and DISCERN all things and yet refrain from judging and condemning
“Philippians 1:9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; 10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;

Christians are supposed to be loving, and not judging of other people. But Christians believe in the absolute truth of God, and of the one and only way to eternal life. Christians believe that people who follow other paths will end up spending eternity in a very unpleasant place. By challenging belief systems that are incorrect and will lead to unpleasantness, Christians are trying to help others reach eternal happiness. It's kind of like an adult who pulls a child out of the road. The adult knows that they child could get hurt, the child hasn't learned that lesson yet.

I was born and raised Christian, and I don't think I was ever told that I was "supposed to be understanding and non-judgmental".
I was told be "forgiving and patient", but not "understanding and non-judgmental".
As far as other people's beliefs are concerned, well, that's their life, not mine. I don't tell people what to believe, or that they're wrong for believing it.
You can't make someone believe something. They either believe or they don't.

Because for them, there are limited seats in Heaven and they've got to do what it takes to make sure they are among the chosen. My favorite one is that everyone else surely must be wrong for them to be right.
Those who are not judgmental act in a way that enables everyone to have a chance. For them the race to Heaven includes every participant, not just themselves and their actions uphold this.
To find a character of the latter is rare, so rare.
