Are there 4 sensors - 1 before each of two cat convertors and 1 after each of two cat converters? Wiring diagram says it is so but the shop manual only shows 2 sensors on the exhaust diagram - one each on the input to the two cat converters. Also which is side bank 2 on?

Bank #2 is the DRIVER side bank (cylinder #s 5,6,7,8) and bank #1 is the PASSENGER side bank (cylinder #s 1,2,3,4). Bank #2 DOWNSTREAM is the Catalyst Monitor, meaning AFTER the catalytic converters. The parts guy is correct about the part number information, but incorrect about the side of the bank. Another thing, the DOWNSTREAM O2 sensors are the ones with the blue connectors. The ones with the green connectors are the UPSTREAM O2 sensors. Hope this helps.

Michael pretty much has the right idea in asking what was the actual code, there are several O2 related codes in an OBD2 system and only a couple of them actually indicate a bad sensor, the rest just indicate what the sensor is reading which is usually the result of a problem somewhere else in the engine, not the sensor itself. They were correct for a GM as far as which sensor was bank 2 sensor 1. You did not mention that you used a scan tool to reset the code after you replaced the sensor. On OBD2 (96 and newer cars sold in the USA) systems unhooking the battery does nothing for the codes. Depending on what the code was in the first place some codes will turn off the light off on their own after the problem is fixed. Other codes will reset after so many cycles if the problem does not occur again. Some other codes will not reset themselves and can only be reset by a scan tool. Emissions related codes (like O2 sensor ones) usually dont rest themselves but it does vary somewhat by make, model, and the specific code.
