i would say since the chairs and cabinets are that color blue.. go with cheerful colors.. bright colors that will stand out.. you can cheer up the place with pretty stuff like golds and beiges to make it classy.. with lots of framed pics in gold.. or go the retro like i said before with the brights.. it can go two different ways.. you can go to a furniture store (a nice one) sounds silly i know.. but tell them the colors.. and see what they say.. its free decorating ideas.. i did that for my vets office when i helped them.. it turned out awesome... it all tied in.. and the decorater lady at the furniture store never really knew thats what she was helping me with.. LOL

The light blue cabinets would be complimented by walls in
a yellow-gold of the same intensity with a provence-style
printed border around the top that would include both colors.
You could bring in some vases filled with blue and yellow
faux flowers like cornflowers, yellow roses, etc. This will
warm up the space and make everyone feel they're in the
South of France. Check out some books on Provence
for inspiration. Very yellow and blue.

Go to Behr.com and play with their color selection program. You have a better idea what colors are there......you say dark blue and light blue, but those can vary greatly. Play with the program a bit and try different color combinations. Having the light blue cabinets isn't a death sentence, the dark blue chairs often have bodies in them so it's not as noticeable during business hours than when the shop is empty.

A beautiful effect is a light beige on all the walls, with white trim. If you have one corner that you want to be really cozy and warm feeling, try doing a chocolate or burgundy accent wall! It's a gorgeous effect, especially if the accent wall has a fireplace or something eye-catching on it. The beige gives the room an overall light quality without the space having the "bleached" look of white. It created a homey environment. The accent wall is a nice way to incorporate a secondary (bold) color into the area, that can also be carried throughout the room with throw pillows on the sofa, vases, flowers, art, etc. By tying elements in the room in with the accent wall color, but also the base wall color, it will tie everything together and create a sophisticated atmosphere for your clients.

Obviously, I can empathize with your boss as I am a NASCAR fan too... unfortunately, I would go with the Jeff Gordon "Dupont rainbow" colours and fill the walls with all the guys and gals of NASCAR... it would look cool but reduce your business traffic and this is not a good thing for sure.
If you went with a light mint green colour, combined with your existing blue shades, you could introduce a "gentle tropical" feel to it with light beige trim and splashes of other colour in photos, paintings, prints, frames etc. Green is proven to be a non-conflicting, soothing colour and you find it in places like hospitals, doc and dentist offices and many workplaces.
It really depends on the type of "market" you attract now and whether you want to broaden your customer type. Some folks like a "loud and obnoxious" feel and some just plain run from that in favour of soothing and settling. Good luck! (NASCAR speedweeks start Feb 8th... tell the boss!)

Unless you guys are willing to change every few years, don't do anything too trendy. I would suggest a neutral color like beige that will match with the blue and won't be out of style in years to come. Spend the money on the extras. New curtains, plants, tall shelves with pretty vases...things that make the salon look elegant.

If the blue is a sky baby blue I would stay in the soft color hue of an turquoise or an other shade of blue. Hues of lavernder are more relaxing and calming. An aqua blue would also be pleasing to the eye top off with a silver metallic glaze.

Brick red is a good idea, but remember that the color of the walls will affect your clients and red tends or aides when ired. Blues does soothes and cools so you can go in that direction and try green or maybe two very different hues of yellow.

Go with a soft blue gray, almost steel blue. It will look trendy and be restful for the customers at the same time. Get navy blue towels and brushed metal accessories. Please don't put up those pictures.
