My dog is coughing/hacking. Vet discarded kennel cough. He took x-rays and says everything is ok. He put him on antibiotics and anhistamines. He is happy and eats but still coughs/hacks. Any suggestions?

Two different vets checked him and both agree he is healthy

How did his heart look in the x-ray? Many times I've seen dogs with a persistant hack have an enlarged heart, heartworms, or something offset with their heart. It very easily overlooked by many vets because they are primarily focused on the lungs.

Another question, is your dog brachialcephalic ( snub, short nosed - like boxer, pug, boston terrier, shih tzu etc.) If he he many times the soft palate was never custumized to fit in the smaller nasal cavaty and it gets in the way, causing snorting, snoring and catching flem and fluids instigating hacking and coughing. There is a palate surgery, but double check with your vet, because most will not do it unless it effects the dogs breathing (blue tounge when exercising).

Have your vet double check his palate, sometimes there is a hole in it, which can cause issues, or a deformity on the palate.

Another thing to consider is a mass in the esophogase or trachea. This too can instigate hacking and coughing.

Well one of the most simplist thing to do to help your dog feel better when he has a persistant cough, is to use a harnes or head halti on the dog. This doesn't put any added stress or pressure on the already comprimized trachea or esophogus and neck area.

How big is your dog? Sometimes it common to see small to toy dogs with a persistant cough. Its mainly because, people use colars or choke chains on their small dog, and they can accidently apply too much pressure to the neck are and collaps the trachea. In this case its a must to put a harnes or head halti on a dog whos had a colapsed trachea.

Well, I know I couldn't answer your question but I really hope I've helped you insigate some further investigation on your dog, and you find what is wrong with him and he gets well. Best of Luck

Some dogs naturally cough and hack. It's disgusting i know. I had a dog that did that and my vets told me it was nothing well i moved and took my dog to the vet for a check up and he started doing while in the vets office so the vet checked turned out my dog had a chronic case of bronchitus. He gave him a few meds and within a few weeks it was all cleared up.

That happened to my dog. It was a crushed trachea. There wasn't anything they could do about it.
Poor baby had to live like that for years, but she was happy as could be.
