I have been carrying out some research into smoking and quitting and along the way I have been alarmed at the amount of people who discover they have some from of mental or anxiety disorder after they quit.

Does anyone know if smoking can actually cause depression ?

Yes it can from what I have studied. Due to the decrease of Oxygen to your brain and the nicotine itself. However, I personally feel from what I have studied that when a person has an anxiety attack after quiting it's due to the fact they are withdrawling from the nicotine. I understand that they "say" that withdrawls from nicotine stop in short order, but I don't think that is the case with everybody.

My Mom Smokes And She's Depressed All the Time..And My Opinion Is That Most Smokers Are Almost Broke Because They Get Addicted To That Crap And Use Their Money On That.Theres More Than 400 Things In One Cigarette And That Might Cause The Depression. And Their Teeth Will Turn Out Yellow And They Will Smell Really Bad...And If They Smoke In Their Car, I Wouldnt Invite Anyone In It...Because It Will Probably Choke Them To Death. When I Was Cleaning Today I Accidentaly Inhaled Cigarette Ashes..Arg It Was Nasty! I Can Still Taste It.

I have been suffering from post partum depression for the past one year when I gave birth to a baby boy. I couldn't stop thinking about how my husband loves him more than me and how things might be better if he wasn't born at all. Thus, I stayed away from him because I knew that I might do something I will regret for the rest of my life.

Almost instantly I went to a therapist and convince them that I need help. Among other things, I've tried herbal supplements and other book to treat depression but nothing works like the Depression Free Method. So now I'm proud to say I'm one of the happiest mother in the world. My husband loves us both very much and I thank the Lord for the blessing he gave us.

Even years after you've quit, you still find that life would be that much easier if you just smoked again. It is a vicious substance and once you smoked it is hard to keep yourself off the cigs. I tried, and I've had periods of smoking and not smoking several times (my record non-smoking time is 4 years!) so I know it inside out. Smoking and being a smoker, however, does not cause any depression at all.

The ingredient's in cigarettes do not cause depression. However studie's have shown that 7 out of 10 people being treated in the U.S. for depression take up the habit of smoking either before or during their bout with depression. Go figure.
