A bacteria (Yersinia pestis) which comes from the gut of fleas causes black plague (bubonic plague).
Inside the flea, bacteria multiply and block off the flea's throat-like area. The flea gets increasingly hungry. When it bites it spits some bacteria out into the bite wound; which infects the one it bites.
