The facial/body hair is the hardest PCOS symptom to correct. Even when women are on the right dose of metformin, it still doesn't seem to help much. That being said...you may not be on a high enough dose of metformin. Many doctors are hesitant to up the dose, but the recommended dose is 1500-2550mg per day. Many women need at least 2000mg per day before they see results. The body and facial hair issue may get better with higher doses of met (the issue probably wont go away, but it will be a little better). If you are not ttc, then you can try spironolactone. It is a drug meant to help with this issue. However, if you are ttc, it is not recommended because it can cause birth defects. It is also important to watch your diet or it works against the metformin. Here's some basic PCOS info that might help. Good luck.

I recommend seeing a reproductive endocrinologist. They are generally more knowledgeable about PCOS and the correct treatment. Unfortunately, many doctors are not aware of the proper treatment.

The underlying cause of PCOS is insulin resistance (IR). The best treatment for PCOS is going on an insulin sensitizing drug such as metformin (1500-2550mg per day) combined with a low carb diet and exercise. There are a few important things to know:

1. Many women "pass" the test for IR, but still respond positively from the metformin. No one knows exactlly why..my thought is that the test is not a sure fire way of detecting the IR.

2. You must be on a high enough dose of metformin. I've heard women complain that their bodies dont start working even though they've been on metformin for awhile. Some doctors are hesitant to up the dose past 1500mg...but for some of us it takes more. I don't respond until my dose is around 2000mg a day.

3. It can take a few months on the correct dose, before your body is regulated.

4. It is important to treat your PCOS even if you are not trying to get pregnant. There are higher risks for many things (high blood pressure, blood clots, diabetes, and many other things) when you have PCOS, but if it is treated properly, then those risks are lowered.

When the PCOS is treated properly, all of your symptoms may not disappear, but they should improve some. It will also be a lot easier to lose weight (and keep it off). Our bodies work against us when we try to lose weight on our own, making it nearly impossible to lose weight.

There are TONS of books about PCOS and dieting. There are two that I recommend. Here's the links at amazon for those:

I also recommend a couple web sites:

http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-bhp... This one is a great message board where you can ask all your PCOS questions or just chat with the women who are also dealing with PCOS. Good luck

I think Trevnme's answer is very informative and you should take close note of it - I on the other hand am an ordinary 'bod' and my only advice would be, to at least assist yourself in your weight problems, is review your dietary intake (I don't mean to be offensive and am not necessarily saying your intake is too great) it may be that you need to devise an eating plan that is solely based around fruit and vegetables with only lean meat and fish say twice or three times a week..... this may not be the whole answer but I'm sure it will go a long way to helping you....
good luck,

You don’t need to exercise for hours on end. Short, sharp sets of exercise will produce better results in the event you work hard. Get a passing up rope, skip for two units, do push ups for a minute or so, skip for two minutes, rest for just one minute. Then change the push as much as something else like sit ups and do the set again. Repeat it five times and it’s a simple, effective workout that will get better results than a long work or swim.

Music forces you to eat more. According to a work by the journal Psychology and also Marketing, soft, classical tunes encourage one to take time over your mealtime, so you consume more meals. So, switch off – silence can make you more aware of what you’re applying your mouth.

Set performance-based goals. Always set yourself incrementally larger goals each week to ensure you’re engaged and have something to strive for. Each little achievement is also a reward that you’re going in the right direction. From doing 10 more squats to mastering a fresh yoga pose, whatever floats your current boat.
