I have seen this LOL used in many replies but what does it mean?

Hello Andy,
The phrase LOL, (as defined by Wikipedia) is a TLA acronym, the abbreviation for "Laugh out loud".
more rarely................ "Lots of Laughter" / Laughs
or even "Lots of Lol".
These are many similar acronmys for expressing laughter. In the Dutch language, "LOL" is a common word meaning "fun".
The term has since being adopted into English spoken conversation speech as for example on msn, where it is acknowledging humour rather than actual laughing.
It could also be redefined as: "Lack of Laughter"
Others acronmys, depending upon where one hears them mean:
A Loyal Orange Lodge - Lloret de Mar
A game series - Lands of Lore,
A PlayStation game -Legend of Legaia,
A soap opera - Love of Life,
A financial abbreviation for - Limit of Liability

Well, Andy, thanks for this question, I only knew of about 3 "LOL"'s but now I know a few more. So its not just msn....its more widespread.....its just a matter of looking.
oh, I nearly forgot...

Some other acronmys other than "LOL", that many people ask me about when I am on the msn chat rooms and ones that I have come across are in my conversations are:

hehe - muffled laughter, suggesting a sneaky aspect to that being laughed at.
OMG - an abbreviation for the popular exclamation "Oh my God!" and used in conversations to exclaim surprise or disgust.
