Recently I joined an online book club. The first book that has been assigned for everyone to read is not available in any library and must be purchased. I am having financial problems, and even though the book is not too expensive, I know if I have to keep buying books then the cost will all add up and compared to bills, groceries, etc. this book club is not a priority. I've wanted to join a book club for a long time now and now that I finally have it feels like I should wait another little while. One of the other members of the book club said if cost of a book is a problem, then to ask her about it and maybe she can arrange something but I'm embarrassed to keep asking her for help everytime I can't afford a book. What should I do?

You may want to find a different book club. There is a lot of great literature out there that IS available in libraries, and there are a lot of book clubs out there that explore those works.

Ask about reading groups at your local library. They may even sponsor their own book club, in which case they probably stock multiple copies of the selected readings to facilitate the group.

Your lifestyle comes before any book club. Don't be embarassed. I think it's admirable that you recognize that this is a cost you can't afford. Check early on amazon.com. Sometimes you can get used books for next to nothing. Talk with the facilitator and see if you all can select books that are readily available (not out of print/circulation). Check your local library for book clubs that might meet there, as they may be more affordable. Whatever you do, don't feel pressed to be in a club that is going to cost you money you can't afford.

I understand where you are coming from. Those little expenses seem to add up quicker than any other expenses we have. Did you also check prices online to buy the book 'used'? If that is still going to add up to too much over a period of time, have you considered starting your own online book club that only uses books readily available in libraries?

Have you tried amazon, you can buy used books quite cheap on there. If not maybe waiting wouldn't be such a bad idea. Or ask for help this time, and if it comes down to needing help again step out of the club then so asking for help doesn't become a habit.

You should never have to purchase books for a book club. They should choose books that are readily available. Find another book club.

Find a book club that is reading books that are in the library. Drop this one, it sounds like a ripoff.

Don't let her "arrange" anything. Find a different book club that reads more available books, or sit this one out.

On a side note, try HalfpriceBooks. You can often find books very inexpensively.

Hmm, i get the feeling your not talking about a book club!! But anyways, whatever kind of situation you have got into, then you simply just take your name off the mailing list, and if they insist on sending you 'books' then just send them back, they cannot make you pay for something you haven't got. GOOD LUCK!!

(professional 26:5) answer a fool in accordance to his foolishness, so as that he won't be smart in his very own eyes. thank you for Asking! RR

DON'T purchase a book you're not interested in reading. that makes no sense. wait until one comes up that sounds good - pass on this one, you don't need an excuse. Just say No!
