Jet lag is a real disorder and actually has a true medical name, desynchronosis. It usually last a couple of days but can go on for as long as a week. People experiencing jet lag have a difficult time maintaining their internal, routine sleep-wake pattern in their new location, because external stimuli, like sunshine and local timetables, dictate a different pattern. For this reason, one can feel lethargic one moment and excited the next. We've have a couple of Japanese exchange students and were told to give them orange juice to help with affects of jet lag. Apparently the carbohydrates and vitamin C boosts the immune system and helps the body recover faster. It seemed to work for our exchange students!

Varies from person to person. Mostly whether how fast your internal biological clock can adjust to the new time zone.

Some can tune their body clock by following their destination timing for their waking pattern and adjust faster. Some people prefer to sleep it off and wake up at the local time. Some use medication. Some use accu-pressure equipment. There are many ways.

Just need to find one that you can use successfully.

A huge oversimplification is one day per time zone. Personally, I feel much greater effects when I travel east than when I travel west. I guess I just love to sleep late in the morning.
