Well first of all, I'd start with a menu. What do you like? Plan meals for the whole week. Think about how much time you have to prepare and cook meals. Then search the web...it's a wonderful tool. You can also search for cooking hints and tips. Do your homework. At first it's hit and miss. You'll get better as you go, and in no time at all, you'll be whipping up meals in the kitchen without recipes!
When I first married, I couldn't make jello! I took a cooking class at a local vocational school. I learned sooo much! They taught me about spices, and techniques I use all the time. But like I said before, Use the web as a learning tool, it's cheaper!

I think your best motivator is health and cost. Meals you can prepare at home are much healthier for you as you control the ingredients. Also, home prepared meals will cost you less in the long run as you can always have leftovers and you can also prepare foods that can be used for other nights. Example, I sometimes prepare spaghetti sauce and use it for regular spaghetti noodles one night and then a night or two later I throw in some meatballs (in the grocery freezer section) and have meatball subs. Then if there is any sauce left I might have lasagna one night or use the sauce for pizza. When I make chili I always make nachos the next night and use the leftover chili. There are lots of things you can do. Once you get comfortable with cooking you can use your imagination. Lots of luck to you and happy cooking.

Get yourself a cook book that has easy recipes and that dont require tons of ingredients. Make something that sounds really good and share it with someone, a good compliment can go a far way for motivation. It is so much cheaper to cook at home and many foods could be frozen for a busy day. Also I have found cooking can be alot of fun especially if you share it with a friend, spouse, mate whoever. Its a great pass time on a nasty day..

Taste is the motivator! Prepared food can't begin to compare to freshly cooked food. Get "Taste of Home" magazine, the recipes are simple and sent in by home cooks. They feature lots of tips on how to cook and prepare foods, and all the recipes have been tested. It's an excellent way for a new cook to learn.

The biggest motivator is money! You can save tons of money by cooking at home. If you invest in a Crock Pot and a Crock Pot cook book, you don't even really have to cook. The crock pot requires little to no attention and because it cooks so slowly, even less expensive meats can be delicious and amazingly tender. From rich stews to delicious roasts, you can prepare meals that will feed an entire family or become packed hot lunches that beat fast food at work any day.

Start with 30 minute meals and then take if from there, the best thing to do is go grocery shopping for food and before hand look up some recipes you know the family will enjoy then buy the stuff. Take one meal at a time, trust me, when you see the delighted faces eating, you'll be on your way.

i'm kind of in the same boat as you....just starting to cook and not really knowing what i'm doing.....here's what helps me tho....

have a couple of good cookbooks on hand (you can always find them at thrift stores if money is an issue....they can get expensive!)
and
always have "staples" on hand (there have been so many times when i was all motivated to make something only to find i didn't have most of the ingredients.....so now i try and keep basics on hand that i can make several different things with)

good luck and have fun!!....it's all a learning experience!

Just think about how much healthier you can be knowing what you cook with and knowing what is in your dish. There is so much freedom cooking your own meals and you can explore a different kind of cuisine everynight without going to expensive restaraunts!
