(I'm not looking for HD DVD - just something that does a nice job upconverting)

I bought a panasonic DVD-S52K because it had good reviews. It has component video output although I'd recommend HDMI for highest resolution. Also it has both coaxial and optical outputs.

You really could get 10 thousand answers to this question.
Please understand, the componant outputs will not give you hi-def.
You would need a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player for that.
If all you can afford is a DVD player, make sure it "upscales" standard dvds. Not all componant output models will do that.
I would stick with a good brand name (Sony / Panansonic) and dont but the lowest price model (nor the top of the line).
You can get a nice model for $75 - $120 with a brand name and componant outputs.

Let your HDTV do ALL the upscaling and deinterlacing. It can probably do as good or better job than a DVD player. There is no reason to scale on both the player and the TV.

So, buy the cheapest DVD player with component out. 90% of them use the same DVD chip from MediaTek anyhow, so save your money.

Some of the previous answers have come close. If your HDTV has a HDMI input (most all recent models are equipped) Find the lowest cost DVD player equipped with a HDMI and optical audio outputs vs. your preferred manufacturers options, appearance and ease of use.

The best one according to PC World is going to be LG. I use their drives in all of my computers. They are easily the best cheap disc drive and DVD player available. Get the LG and you can't go wrong and never trust Consumer Reports.
