Our sheriffs have been working very hard, especially these last few weeks, and I don't think that they understand how much we appreciate them.
I'm looking for ideas on an individual level. Things that the average person can do, above and beyond simply obeying the law and keeping an eye out for criminals.

Our Fort Bend county (west of Houston's Harris county) police (sheriffs?) have been very effective in making the Christmas season safe and pleasant and in managing the troubles of these recent storms, just to name a few. We are a good county, but I think that their work has been very instrumental in that.

If you want your observations to be known start by writing a letter to the sheriff and point out specific issues that please you. Call your local media and let them know. In my area there is a section in the local newspaper that highlights those who've done a good job! Nothing wrong with highlighting an entire agency. Thank you on behalf of all of law enforcement for your words of encouragement. They're tough to get these days! Best wishes!

Get a whole group of people together. Hopefully it will be a lot of people from around the community. When you have people gathered, start thinking of other groups that support the officers such as the 100 Club, the Masonic lodge, Rotary club, any of those. Try to make contact with these organizations and tell them that you want to show a big appreciation for the officers there. See if they will help with some funding, or any other help that they can provide like a place to have a big dinner for the officers.
They should be more than willing to help out. Even if they don't dip into thier own treasurey, they will more than likely try to ask for donations from the members for the specific cause.
Then have a nice bbq or dinner or whatever else you want to. If you know of special officers that need recognition, get them somthing that will be awarded to them. Be sure to make sure you get something for all officers.
They to the whole thing would be to let them know that you have appreciated all their hard work this past year or season and let them know how much it means to you as a community.

Most sheriff's departments have pet charities, often things having to do with children. You might call the department PR officer and ask. Then make a donation to that charity, and cite your gratitude for their good manners and wise handling of the holiday season as the reason for making the donation in their name. They will be notified, and thanked for their work. If it's a reasonably large donation, it may be the start of a lovely friendship or two for you in your community.
Bless you for wanting to do this sort of positive thing.

This may be a little biased, but... see if they have an Explorer Post. Explorers volunteer a lot of time helping the community and department and the posts can always use the money for uniforms, competitions, etc. Just another idea to consider...

A letter to the Sheriff is always nice, try to mention specific Deputies and incidents. That way the individuals get recognized. Sometimes those letters are saved in the personnel folders.

Notes or letters of appreciation and thanks are always welcome. A fruit basket or cookie platter is always nice. Maybe an open forum letter in the local paper?
I think the most important thing you can do for an Officer is respect his work. Know that if you are pulled over, they are doing their JOB!! Smile and be polite & respectful. Don't give them a hard time and make sure you pull over far enough to keep them out of danger as they approach your car. These things will make all the difference.
My husband and I know every officer in our town by name. We are also well known. If we were ever pulled over for something, we would accept that and move forward. It is their job and we appreciate them for it.
Have a good day!!

Donations are a great way to support your local law enforcement agency. They are always in need of that. Another good way to express your opinion is through your local newspaper such as a letter to the editor. Alot of times, people only write to complain. It's a nice way to speak up when they are doing a good job as well.

How many sheriffs do you have? Most counties have only one elected official called a sheriff. If you have more then one, you must be in a really bad area.
Just write them a card and say 'thanks.'

form citizen groups to help keep them honest and law abiding. i don't believe any cop wants to be a bad cop. press for more psych help for them to deal with the stress. better training will make for better public perception.
