Why is it so important to Hollywood studios that Americans not be allowed to watch DVD's from Europe, Asia, etc? I had to get an NTSC/PAL region-free player so that I could watch DVD's from anywhere. As long as I purchase real DVD's from real stores I don't think it matters which country I purchase it from. Also some DVD's are only available from the UK and not the US. Am I wrong?

The region coding is of no importance to the user. It has nothing to do with the type of electrical outlet being used, nor does it have anything to do with the lines of resolution. I've removed the code from my American DVDs and they work fine in New Zealand and Indonesia. The resolution is controlled by the player, not the DVD, in much the way your computer connects to the same internet, regardless of what your monitor resolution is. Also, the electrical power used on the player does not matter to the DVD, since the DVD is read only. It does not care what voltage is applied to the player, it reads the same. This is like all the computers that are connected to the internet do not have the same voltages, yet they all work together, because the internet deals with digital information, not voltage levels.

Anyways, the real answer to your question of why it is so important to Hollywood studios that Americans not be allowed to watch DVD's from Europe, Asia, etc is quite simple: $$$$$$$$$.

There are also some DVDs that are not available in the UK, but are available in the US. My husband is from England. We have many DVDs from both regions and just bought a region free DVD player. It works for us :)

region coding is done to avoid piracy, for example us DVD can not be played in India, unless you have DVD player purchased in USA, In India you can play DVD only on DVD purchased from Indian company manufactured by an Indian company

You are right. However, there is a program called DVD Shrink that will allow you to copy the movies and drop ALL the coding. Can't tell ya where to get it though....but it is real easy to find and use!!

Because in different countries they have different electronics and different outlets so DVD's and VHS tapes are all made for the different countries to accomodate each one.
