Back in Jesus's day, they did not have the kind of water purification system that we do, today. The water was undrinkable at times. They regularly drank wine. You have to also think about the fact that their wine, was probably nothing like ours. Also it doesn't say in the bible that we shouldn't drink. It actually says somewhere( i cannot remember the scripture) in wine there is truth. That is true, isn't it? When people start drinking they start being real honest. The bible tells us not to drink excessively. Meaning, don't drink so much that you get so drunk that you fall out and act like a fool. And don't get addicted to it.( alcoholism) God never says in the bible NOT to drink. But, He warns against the misuse of alcohol.

As a matter of fact drinking in moderation is good for your health. Multiple studies have indicated that a glass of wine a day helps protect against vascular diseases including stroke. Even the Bible states that a little wine is good to aid your digestion. In any case, wine was the common drink of Jesus's time. He drank it. The apostles drank it. So drinking it cannot be against His teachings. Nowhere in the Bible is there any hint that moderate drinking of alcohol should be avoided. The Bible does contain teaching aganist the abuse or excess of alcohol - drunkenness - just as it warns against the abuse or excess of anything else.

It seems to be a symptom of modern society that everything that has a benefit is overused. Wine is good for you in small amounts, but it is harmful in larger amounts. This is true for any substance. Paracelsus said that any substance, in a sufficient amount, is a poison. This is true even for water, the drink that humans cannot survive without.
Because of those who abuse alcohol, it is given a bad name by people who do not realize the real meaning of "moderation."
P.S. I am not convinced that drinking green tea wouldn't give you all the same benefits of drinking red wine. It has plenty of antioxidants and tannins as well.

Actually, drinking a glass of red wine or beer a day is extremely healthy. The tannins lower blood pressure and the bad colesterol while raising the good colesterol.
Sho-nuff: I'll have to look it up but the studies I've seen suggested the alcohol itself as well played an important metabolic role in it. I'll add more later if I can find them again.

Actually wine is no better than grape juice.
It's all about the anti-oxidants.
People just like the buzz from the alcohol.
Edit: Just doing some more resarch on everybody's best friend wikipedia and it seems that alcohol does have some positive effects in moderation, including improved congnitive function... and I always thought that was a drunkards excuse.

Not only was Jesus' first miracle to convert water into wine but the Apostle Paul suggested that Timothy have a little wine "for the sake of your stomach." The bible has never condemned drinking wine... only drunkenness.

Actually in moderation alcohol can be very beneficial to the body. Especially wine which is positively loaded with anti-oxidants. Plus alcohol slightly thins the blood decreasing the chances of blood clots and strokes, and their are some emerging studies that show a slight decrease in bad cholesterol with regular light consumption of alcohol.

Drinking in moderation is actually good for your health -- especially drinking wine in moderation. Many studies have shown that moderate drinkers live longer than non-drinkers.
Besides, the Psalm says that God made wine "to make glad the heart of man."

If your look into the history of wines, you'll come to realize that Jesus did not drunk fermented wine.
Wine then was not what we know wine as today.
Whenever they made wine it was really grape juice because they rarely had vineyards like we have today because the cold would ruin the grape juice from fermenting.
The bible even refers to grapes as wine.
And they're are many verse condemning drunkenness

People drank wine back then because the water was unhealthy, it was not strong alcohol-wise, it was just not as germy as the water they had for drinking.
Peter Griffin at communion:
"Man, this is the blood of Christ? He must have been wasted 24-7!"
hahaha.
