This is a tough balance to maintain. Your muscles typically burn carbohydrates as a preferred energy source, which is why you'll see athletes in marathon, triathlon, etc., do major carbo loading (pancakes, pasta, etc.) before they work out. Be careful not to consume too many carbs because they convert to fat if they persist in the bloodstream, particularly simple carbs like from bread and pasta. After you workout, your body needs higher protein in order to provide the building blocks to rebuild muscle mass, but many easily accessible proteins are high in fat. So, I recommend lean cuts or better yet fish to provide the requisite muscle building proteins. Make sure you take a B vitamin supplement as well, as B vitamins aid in the complex and toxic chemical reactions necessary to correctly purge wasted muscle and replace it with new lean muscle mass.

You need a good source of protein and a complex carb. You should also have a vitamin B complex as well as vitamins C and E. Bee pollen has all of these. It has more protein per pound than a steak. Try to stay away from whey protein it is a very poor source for protein (one less amino acid and it wouldn't even be considered a protein).
Complex carbs will give you the energy without putting on fat. Plus the B vitamins are essential for energy production. Vitamin E helps in cell repair (you need this for working out) and vitamin C will recharge B and E. C will also help in cell repair. Bee pollen protein is all plant protein therefore will build lean muscle. It contains up to 22 amino acids (unlike whey that only contains 16 aminos).
If you make it with a banana milk shake you will also get the benefits of the banana. Try this it's really good:
1 banana
1cup skim milk or soy milk
1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 Tablespoon bee pollen
Ice to desired consistency
Blend it all together and you have a high energy protein drink!

High protein foods are the best. Try eating lots of tuna or salmon. We buy the Starkist lightly seasoned tuna fillets and just eat it right out of the pouch. Hard boiled eggs are good too. Just eat the whites, not the yoke. Also, eat nuts like peanuts, walnuts or almonds. Good for energy.

Bananas give you instant energy, but you also need protein to add muscle, so have a protein shake too.
Bikers on long marathons eat bananas for quick energy. They have no time to digest or to convert the food to sugar, for energy.

you can got to any health foods store or a gnc and they will hook you up. carbs and fruits are great for energy. eating things like jerky which is pretty much fat free but full of protein will help with muscle. my husband uses some muscle shake powder stuff from gnc which works great. but i would go to somewhere like that anyways and consult with a speacialist because depending on what type of muscle you want to acheive depends on how your diet should be.

I'd recommend bananas for energy BEFORE the workout and tuna for protein after - there's no major need to bulk up on carbohydrates after a workout unless you need the energy to do some other activity.
