There was not a ban on people using the term Merry Christmas in the UK. I think your friend had misled you slightly. The politicians and liberalists in the UK seem to have a notion that the celebration of a Christian Festival in a Christian country could be seen as politically incorrect. Consequently, many politicians, liberalists, and general 'do-gooders' started to use the terms 'Happy Hoildays' or 'Seasons Greetings' as a means to avoid offending the non-christian population within the UK.
Personally, I have muslim, sikh, catholic and jewish friends, and not one single person objected to the phrase 'Merry Christmas'. This is just another case of Political Correctness gone mad

Of course that isn't true. Some local councils and shops are starting to use the American phrase "happy holidays" instead of "merry christmas" in order to be a bit more inclusive, but there are no official restrictions on anyone saying "merry christmas" to whoever they like.
As someone above pointed out, people in the UK tend to say "happy christmas" rather than "merry christmas".

No, that's a load of rubbish. I've seen people cross out merry and put happy (due to the link between the term 'merry' and alcohol excess), but no, there are no restrictions like that. Yet.

Did I pass over the memo on forcible indoctrination of childrens? it is so final millennium. In all seriousness, in case you do not opt to have your infants rejoice the Christian components of the Christmas holiday, then purely do not rejoice them. i be attentive to many human beings for whom Christmas is very like Thanksgiving, different than with promises. it fairly is an afternoon to get alongside with family members and take area in some charitable activities. you do not ought to rigidity approximately gangs of armed Catholics flattening your door and forcing your loved ones to transform. we are surprisingly risk free, actually, and customarily tolerant of people who have not got self belief the comparable issues we do. i will advise a radical concept right here - we are going to be well mannered and respectful of you in case you come back us the courtesy. it fairly is slightly early, yet i will choose you a chuffed year-end holiday of your selection. i wish it fairly is a solid one!

Nope she's completely exaggerating, sometimes some workplaces ask you to say happy holidays to not offend people of other religions but for the most part everyone says it!

She's pulling your leg. There is no such restriction in the UK, although one there is more likely to say "Happy Christmas".
