Loads of people get this - don't worry. It doesn't mean you have cancer.

You will probably be asked to go back for another test in 6 months.

Or you may be sent to the hozzy for a test called a colposcopy where they have a look at what's going on up there.

Talk to your GP or nurse and ask them what the next step is going to be.

I had an abnormal smear test some years ago.. the doctors kept a close eye on me by giving me a second test a couple of weeks after the first and then they recalled me at first six months after and then every year for three years.

When I asked the doctor what could have caused the abnormality he told me that even a small thing such as the common cold could cause a change in the smear test as the virus is in the mucus.. and this mucus is also in the cervix so please don't worry too much but do keep getting it checked out.

Nothing ever came of my abnormal results it could be the same with you..

Hope this helps.

First of all, I will say please do not worry. Like yourself, I and many of my friends have had abnormal results at some point. It was worrying for me at the time as I am only in my mid 20's and I had abnormal results for over a year and a half. However my GP reasured me that this can happen at any time in a womans life and doctors now believe that it is to do with hormonal changes within the womans body. An abnormal result does not necessarily mean cancer. If results come back abnormal, GPs will most likely repeat the test every six months until the results do return to normal. Most often this is the case, but in fewer instances, further treatment may be necessary: ie) a colposcopy procedure. There are different stages when abnormal results show. Borderline changes usually require no action, just regular check ups.
If you do have worries about the results or notice any unusual changes in your body such as irregular bleeding/ pelvic pain, do not hesitate to speak to your GP/ nurse. They are there to put your mind at ease!

hope this is of help

Many women get an abnormal smear test result, you should be invited to have another one done either3,6 or 12 months after the first. The abnormallity can go on its own, sometimes after 2 or 3 abnormal test results you will be asked to go for further investigation, even then there may be nothing to worry about. All you have to do is to take the advice of the dr or nurse. There are a few different abnormalaties ask your dr which one you have and discuss it with them,if you feel you cannot there are many sites that will give you avice on this. Not all abnormal smear test results are cancer.

It does not matter what age you are when you get a pap smear. Abnormal testing is well worth looking in to..
My neice who is 20 just got an abnormal testing and it was not so good..
Make sure you have a good doctor and see that he does not wait too long to do further testings... good luck and God Bless

you will be recalled in 6 months for another smear if the abnormality is still there they will treat at a colposcopy unit at hospital it is like a smear but they also take a small biopsy.Sometimes the abnormality can clear itself up that is why they tend to leave it for 6 months.

If you had an abnormal pap test you must have a follow up appointment to make sure there is nothing going on. When got my first abnormal pap test I went to the doctor for a follow up appointment immediately and good thing I did because it ended up being cancer cells and all by that pap test I found that I had cervical cancer the #1 killer in women so PLEASE go to a follow up appointment it is all ways better to be safe than sorry. Good luck!

You need to speak with a doctor or nurse where you had your test done. There are different levels of abnormality; most mean you need to keep an eye on it and get another test soon.
