If you can afford it - Yellowstone National Park.

Otherwise - you can combine beach and mountains by going to Santa Cruz in California. Nearby drive is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, there's also the beach boardwalk, in Scott's Valley there's a museum/train ride that's cool.

There's the downtown shopping - some good restaurants...

actually I have been both places....
The mountains are very windy though might be a little rough on the 15 month old... I enjoyed the beach because my family and I collected shells, played in the sand, enjoyed the sunshine, at sunset it's really beautiful... My kids like the beach better...
Have fun and enjoy........

I prefer the mountains myself over frying on a beach. But, it is a personal decision that you should answer for yourself. What do you prefer to do?

Well in Swansea Wales there is a little of both. You can visit the Gower pennisula and climb the cliffs there and there is plenty of beach below as well as caves.
